Craft Supplies

Welcome to craft-supplies.biz! This site is devoted to providing information on art and craft supplies. We do not endorse any one product nor are we selling anything. We just want all flourishing artists to have a place to find basic information on all their supply needs.

All great art has one thing in common; it was created using the proper supplies. Using supplies incorrectly can mean disaster for many craft projects. Many different types of art have specific materials. For example watercolors require different brushes, paper, and paint then oil painting, and the supplies needed for cross stitching is a whole other story.

Paper can made one of those mediums that have a wide variety of purposes. Pencil drawing paper has a different texture than paper used for pastels, there’s also paper for photos, watercolors, scrapbooking, and kid’s crafts. Smooth white paper is best for those working with pencil and color pencils, while charcoal or pastels need a slightly rougher surface. Origami paper is square shaped and thin so that can be easily folded.

Paint brushes are another craft supply that can vary greatly depending on the project. Brushes can be made from synthetic or natural hair. Some old-school artists will swear by the natural hair brushes, whereas today’s earth friendly artists avoid the natural brushes, knowing that they are made out of squirrel hair, hog bristles, and other animals’ coats.

Brushes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The size is usually indicated by a number from 0-10. Each individual brand has its own sizing scale so a brush that is a seven in one brand may not be the same size as a seven in a different brand. Shapes vary depending on the type of stroke desired. Round brushes are good for fine lines and detailing, while a flat brush will give you broad strokes.

A good collection of craft supplies will include several types of pens and pencils. Regular drawing pencils come with leads in varying hardness, depending on the darkness of the line desired. Charcoal pencils leave a smoky, ultra-smudgeable line. Watercolor pencils or water soluble pencils leave a mark that can blend with the aid of water. Liquid pencil goes on like paint but then dries to a pencil-like texture.

Sewing crafts can be anything from quilting and cross stitch to making fashions. Depending, again, on the project one could need yarn or thread, knitting needles or sewing needles, knits or tapestries. Needlepoint is done on canvas with yarn or thread. Many sewing crafts require a frame to attach the piece to while it is being created, like quilting or embroidering.

Constructional crafts require a variety of supplies. Creating a birdhouse will require wood, hammer, nails, and acrylic paint. Making wreaths and flower arrangements requires dried or artificial foliage, wire, glue, and other adornments. Constructional craft supplies include wood, glue, paint, hand tools and many other items depending on the item being created. Candle makers for example, need wax, coloring, molds, and scented oils.

Supplies can be found at arts and crafts stores and for discount prices online. When buying online remember to thoroughly read the specifications, look for return and exchange policies, check sizes, and recommended uses. Many online stores will let you return an un-opened, unused product, but some items like paint may not be returnable.
